If you have read any of Phillip Slater’s books or received the SparePartsKnowHow.com newsletter you will already understand the practical nature of the material that we provide. In addition in 2012 the Logistics Association of Australia presented Phillip Slater with the prestigious Leadership in Logistics Education Award and specifically cited the establishment of SparePartsKnowHow.com as a key part of the deciding criteria. - Does it just repeat what’s in the books?
No, the site builds and extends on the material in the books. Importantly, the training courses and videos provide a way of accessing the information that a book just cannot replicate. Presenting material in different formats suits the different ways that people learn. Contact us for details.
- Will our people use it?
Our experience is that users visit the site regularly. But perhaps the best guide is that the renewal rate for individual members is around 80% – logically people wouldn’t renew if they weren’t using the site. Contact us for details.
- How will we measure progress?
For evaluating company progress members can access a Capability Framework & Self-Assessment tool so that they are able to evaluate their site performance immediately, identify where they need to improve, and then measure that improvement as regularly as it suits them. Using this tool you can see exactly where you have (and have not) improved your performance.
At an individual level, our Continuing Professional Development program provides a series of online quizzes that enable each subscriber to test their knowledge and identify where to target their time and energy to improve their own know how. Badges are awarded for progress and there is certificate for those that complete all modules. Contact us for details.
- How does SparePartsKnowHow.com compare to other options?
We don’t know of any direct alternative to the resources available at SparePartsKnowHow.com. This means that your only other options is the expense and inconvenience of in-person training. Attendance for one person at a one-day training event typically costs about double the 12 month membership to SparePartsKnowHow.com. But in-person training doesn’t include the value from 12-month access to unlimited training and refresher reviews plus exposure to more material than could be reasonably included in a short in-person training course. Alternatively you could try Google searches for random articles of doubtful origin or maybe just buy a book. On that basis we would say that nothing compares to the SparePartsKnowHow.com website. - Is online training really a substitute for in-person training?
The Khan Academy has found that ‘flipping the classroom’ so that people work online at their own pace on the core materials works better than in-person training alone. The reason for this is that the ‘student’ gets to revisit the material as often as they need to and gets direct access for the entire period of the subscription. With in-person training if you don’t get it on the day you don’t get a second chance. Contact us for details.
- What sort of payback will we get?
The reality is that the investment is pretty small when compared to the value held and spent on inventory so just one smarter decision will provide the immediate payback. Having said that, one of our clients has come forward and publically stated that they reduced their inventory by 50% by using the resources at SparePartsKnowHow.com. Watch the video here.
From one perspective the key issue here is risk management and access to expert resources is one way to mitigate your risk. In addition, most companies view this membership as professional development for their personnel and this helps ensure that the company has the skills and capabilities necessary for their ongoing operations and they are getting the most from the contribution of each employee.
