Storeroom Management: The 3 As For Effective Management

Video Transcript

Hi, my name is Phillip Slater. For the next couple of minutes I’d just like to give you something to think about.

Storeroom management is one of the key functions associated with spare parts inventory.

If your storeroom isn’t managed effectively nothing else will really work and today, I’d like to raise with you the three A’s of storeroom management.

The three A’s are Availability, Accessibility and Accuracy. Let’s take a look at each of those in turn.

Availability is about ensuring that the parts are there when needed. Achieving this requires more than just an appropriate reorder point setting. It requires timely placement of orders, timely receipt of orders and management of that entire process.

The second A is Accessibility, and this means that the parts are easy to locate and remove for use.

Now for this you need to ensure, that you have in place an appropriate location strategy.
You need to have appropriate storage systems, so that parts can be found and removed.
You need to have appropriate lifting equipment, when that’s required. People may need to reach higher levels on the shelves. They might need to see where things are on the shelves, so you’re going to need appropriate labelling systems.

You also need to make sure that the physical location and the recorded location, that is recorded in your ERP, that those two things match.

The third A is Accuracy, and this is ensuring that the recorded quantities and the physical quantities match. High accuracy in your spare parts inventory comes from disciplined management of your transactional processes. That is, making sure you record all the comings and goings of your spare parts.

Storeroom management, as I have already said, is a key function for achieving your goals with spare parts inventory management.

By focusing on the 3 A’s you will ensure that your storeroom management is the support system that you need.

That’s something to think about.
